Peach is the most large-fruited horticultural crop among the fairly common stone plants, and nectarine has competed with it quite recently. Growing these fruit crops in Ukraine allows you to get a quick-growing and productive plant, which has such positive qualities as self-fertility and good productivity. Nectarine and peach in Ukraine show not only a high survival rate, but also a very good yield.
The best varieties
It should be remembered that peaches are the most heat-loving, least winter-hardy and most early-growing plants, and carefully choose a variety taking into account the characteristics of the growing region. In Ukraine, twenty peach varieties and several nectarines, including late and early ones, are zoned.
Popular peach varieties
For the south, varieties should be selected whose characteristics and description state the presence of such qualities as decent productivity, resistance to the main, most common diseases and pests.
Peach Variety Name | Wood | Crown | Fruit | Pulp | Harvest maturity |
Golden Anniversary | Tall, powerful enough, comes into fruition in the third year | Sprawling | Large, weighing up to 125-135 g, oval, golden yellow with tan | Orange-yellow color, with good density, delicate and fibrous, quite juicy, with aroma | Medium ripening |
"Kiev early" | Mid-layer, with a good level of winter hardiness | Rare, wide and pyramidal | Medium in size, weighing 90 g, roundly elongated, beige yellow, with a tan | Greenish-white color, with good juiciness and pleasant taste. | End of July |
"Red-cheeked" | Medium layer with good winter hardiness | Thickness average, not too sprawling | Large, weighing 120-130 g, broadly oval, with a creamy green surface and a bright tan | Green-white, with moderate fiber, juicy and tasty | Early ripening period |
"Kremlin" | With high growth power and high productivity | Wide-haired and slightly spreading | Medium, weighing 170 g, rounded, yellow-orange in color with a tan | Yellow-orange, with fiber and medium density. Succulent and fragrant enough | Medium ripening |
"Rosy" | A tall plant with thick and powerful annual shoots | Spreading and attractive crown | Rounded, large, weighing 125 g, with pronounced abdominal suture, thin-skinned, creamy yellow | Creamy white with sufficient juiciness and aroma | Mid early |
"Soviet" | Medium-sized plant with medium winter hardiness | Spherical and very easy to care for crown | Relatively large, weighing 140-145 g, blunt-oval in shape, with a greenish-yellow surface and tan | Yellow, with delicate fiber, juicy and fragrant | First half of august |
"Juicy" | Vigorous and with sufficient winter hardiness | Thickness average, not too sprawling | A mass of 152-165 g, broadly oval, greenish-cream color with a tan | White or greenish-cream color, with medium fiber, juicy and fragrant | Early ripening |
The popular varieties of nectarine
Nectarines are somewhat less popular with Ukrainian gardeners. The best are nectarine varieties that demonstrate high quality indicators and stable annual yields.
Name of the nectarine variety | Wood | Crown | Fruit | Pulp | Harvest maturity |
Red Gold | Medium and very productive | With average spreading | Round-spherical, with a dark red blush, large, weighing up to 215 g | Thick and juicy, with medium fiber. | Medium late |
Fleming Fury | Medium growth, good yields | Average sprawl | Large, with a red blush, ovoid or spherical | Yellow, with good juiciness and delicate fiber. | The first decade of August |
Flavoron | A tall plant with excellent yield and decent frost resistance | Compact and easy to care for | Round oval, with a seam, yellow with a red blush | Medium Density, Juicy and Fragrant | Medium late |
"Rebus" | Medium-sized and very powerful plant with good productivity | Average sprawl | Large, spherical, weighing at least 185-195 g | Thick, sweet, tender and aromatic. | Mid early |
Alitop | A tall plant with excellent yield and decent frost resistance | It is represented by powerful branches, needs to be rationed. | Rounded-oblong, symmetrical, with a pronounced bright blush | Yellow with red veins, juicy and tasty | Medium late |
Features of planting seedlings
High-quality varietal seedlings in nurseries should meet the following requirements:
- well-developed and powerful root system;
- lack of exfoliation and damage to the cortex on the stem and branches;
- lack of signs of disease or pest damage.
Stably high yields of peach and nectarine can be obtained when grown on warm sandy or gravel soils. High-quality soil must be well drained due to the intolerance of the fruit culture to stagnation. Before planting plants, it is necessary to conduct a deep digging of the soil and introduce a sufficiently large amount of organic matter, mainly with a rough structure. Mandatory is the use of quality drainage.
Care technology
Agricultural technology for growing stone fruits such as nectarine and peach, in the conditions of personal fruit growing in Ukraine, it involves the following measures:
- soil fertility indicators are supported by the application of mineral and organic fertilizers in the form of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus;
- nitrogen-containing fertilizers have a direct impact on the indicators of vegetative growth and fruit formation;
- in the early spring, it is recommended to add a solution based on ammonium nitrate into the trunk circles, and in the fall, fruit plantations should be fed with potash mineral fertilizers in the form of wood ash;
- Fertilizers represented by compost, manure, slurry and green manure crops are very effective.
Plants such as peach and nectarine are fairly drought tolerant crops, but good yields are not possible without timely watering, as well as subsequent loosening of the soil in near-stem circles. Among other things, annual forming and sanitary trimming of the crown should be carried out, as well as systematic preventive treatment of fruit stands, reducing the risk of disease and pests.
The main diseases of peach and nectarine include claustosporiosis, curly leaves, powdery mildew, stone fruit moniliosis and fruit rot. In addition, without proper care and timely prevention, the risk of damage to the fruit plantations of aphids, weevils, flower beetles and ticks remains.

To combat the most common diseases and plant parasites of peach and nectarine, timely chemical treatments are carried out, and a system of protective measures must be correctly and correctly formed.
