Karabakh horses are an old breed. They belong to mountain riding horses. The animals were bred in Nagorno-Karabakh. The breed reached its maximum flourishing in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Animals are of medium height and elegant exterior. The formation of horses was influenced by ancient Iranian and Turkmen animals. Subsequently, they interbred with Arabian horses.

History, spread and decline

The breeding of the Karabakh breed was carried out in the Transcaucasus. It was carried out in a herd manner. At the same time, purebred and half-bred queens were present in one herd. However, stallions have always been purebred. As a result, it was possible to obtain a hybrid of an improved horse.

Since ancient times, the Karabakh horses were considered one of the best oriental breeds. At the same time, at the end of the nineteenth, early twentieth century, horse breeding fell into decay. This was due to the insufficient growth of horses for use in regular cavalry. The factory, which was founded by the khans, disappeared in 1905.

Advantages and disadvantages

These animals have many advantages:

  • harmonious physique;
  • calm character;
  • beautiful exterior;
  • strong legs and sturdy hooves;
  • various colors - there are red, bay, brown animals.

The only drawback is not too high growth. Moreover, this disadvantage is easily compensated for by endurance and performance.

Maintenance, care and feeding

It is recommended to keep horses in separate stalls. The area of the premises should be 3 square meters. It is recommended to walk the animals for several hours a day. They also need communication with other horses.

It is recommended to use wooden stables for maintenance. However, brick buildings are also quite suitable. Ceilings should be up to 3 meters high. Each stall should have windows. Equally important is the availability of a high-quality ventilation system.

It is imperative to make sure that there are no drafts in the room, otherwise there is a risk of developing dangerous pathologies. There should be walking pens near the stables. It is recommended to use sawdust, peat or straw as bedding. It is worth changing the cover every day.

To prevent the development of pathologies, individuals need to be systematically vaccinated. It is recommended that horses be shown to a veterinarian twice a year. Young animals need much more supervision from a breeder and veterinarian. It is recommended to pay special attention to the development of bones and muscles.

It is worth feeding the animals taking into account the loads. In this case, the basis of the diet should be hay and oats. Horses are also given carrots and bran. Animals need salt. Its entry into the body should definitely be controlled. To do this, place a lick briquette in the stall.

In spring and summer, horses are recommended to be grazed in the fields. It is beneficial to give vitamins and minerals to animals. It is also permissible to introduce apples, watermelons, fodder beets into the diet.

Horses need water. It is permissible to run it through automatic drinkers or put buckets of water before each feeding. This process should not be left to chance. If a hot horse drinks water, it can bring great harm to its health.

Breeding the breed

It is allowed to breed only healthy animals that do not have behavioral disorders. It is important to ensure that the mare in a pair is larger than the stallion. It is permissible to mate in a natural or artificial way. The best time to breed animals is from mid-March to July. Thanks to this, the foal will be born next spring or summer. This period is considered the most favorable because it is characterized by a sufficient amount of grass.

A special posture will help determine the mare's readiness for mating. The female spreads widely and slightly bends her hind legs, lowers her head and lifts her tail. Also, the characteristic signs include increased urination and mucus production. In order for the mating to be successful, the stallion must be positioned on the female until the sperm is completely ejected. After that, the mare needs 10 minutes to drive.

The use of Karabakh horses

Horse riding is considered the main purpose of the Karabakh horses. At the initial stage of development, half-blooded individuals were used as workers and pack animals. At the same time, the Caucasian nobility traveled to purebred representatives. Today, animals are used as sports and riding.

Karabakh horses are distinguished by a number of positive characteristics. They are distinguished by their attractive appearance and high degree of endurance. To successfully breed animals, they need to provide adequate care and balanced nutrition.
